This book which is a compilation of 24 research papers focuses on the women’s issues in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It tries to explore as to how the goal of reducing poverty, universal literacy and inequality has not been met in the past so many decades. It also examines and discusses various themes including issues of marriage and divorce in Islam in Kashmir valley, women’s political participation and discrimination, inequality, socio-economic status, women prisoners, self help groups, issues of mental health, female foeticide, single mothers, women in policing, violence against women and challenges in empowerment etc. The book takes a fresh look at the issues faced by the women in J & K. Not only the gender gap in accessing education, health, and economic and political participation remains very wide in the state, the gap between rural and urban population in respect of economic opportunities and access to social services also continues to exist. The book raises issues of interest to policy makers, practitioners and scholars regarding women’s issues in Jammu and Kashmir.
