THE LEGEND OF SHRI LINGARAJ TEMPLE (HARDCOVER)

The legend of Shri Lingaraj Temple, located in Bhubaneswar, is deeply connected with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to ancient belief, this sacred temple marks the place where Lord Shiva, known here as Lingaraj or “The King of Lingas,” appeared to bless his devotees and protect the land from evil forces. One popular legend says that Goddess Parvati killed two demons, Kritti and Vasa, who were troubling the people of the region. After the fierce battle, she felt thirsty and requested Lord Shiva for water. Shiva then struck the ground with his trident, and water from all holy rivers flowed together to form the sacred Bindusagar Lake near the temple. This lake is still considered highly holy by devotees. Another belief holds that Lord Shiva chose Bhubaneswar as his divine abode, making it a center of Shaivite worship. The temple’s main deity, Harihara, represents the united form of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, symbolizing harmony between Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Thus, Shri Lingaraj Temple stands not only as a masterpiece of architecture but also as a living symbol of faith, devotion, and divine power.
